Digital Karnak experiences grow

The Digital Karnak project is adding a new way to experience the temple complex, its over 3000 years of development and the vast amount of information uncovered by archaeologists and scholars. Technologists from the DRC are currently migrating the reconstructions, photogrammetric models, and associated data into Unity and producing virtual reality experiences that can be navigated in the HTC Vive.

3D Scanning and Printing Workshop

At the recent DRC 3D Scanning and Printing Workshop two handheld 3D scanners, the Artec Eva and Space Spider, were demonstrated on a range of object types. Andy Greyson walked the audience through how to set up the environment, capture the data, and process the scans, while also providing tips to efficiently utilize the variety of tools included in the software. The second half of the workshop focused on 3D printing during an interactive Q&A with Doug Daniels. Two 3D printers from the UCLA Library Lux Lab were printing throughout the workshop: the MakerBot 5th Gen (a fused deposition modeling printer) and Form 2 (stereolithographic printer). Tour to Downtown LA Theater District

Anthony Caldwell, lead on the Architectural Reconstructions on Broadway project, led a group of Cotsen Institute of Archaeology supporters on a tour focusing on the architectural history of the Historic Core in Downtown Los Angeles. Anthony described the movie palaces that filled Broadway Street and the great variety of architectural styles, innovative technologies and cultural changes that evolved in the early 20th century.
